Uringa Orienteers is proud to present Orienteering with Pride in Balmain, a fun “cunning running” event in which you have 45 minutes to explore a variety of local features showcasing the rich LGBTQ history on the Balmain peninsula. Hosted in collaboration with Pride Cup and the Inner West Council, the event is part of the Sydney Summer Series, a series of 26 map running events held on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer in Sydney’s most scenic areas. These events are for everyone, attracting walkers and joggers through to champion runners, and you can participate individually or in a group. You don’t need any special gear apart from comfortable walking/running shoes, and pride-themed clothing is more than welcome! Coaches will be on hand to provide instruction to all first timers. The idea is to visit up to 30 local checkpoints known as “controls” which are placed on landmarks around local streets, parks and trails, using a special orienteering map to help navigate your way around. The checkpoints have different score values and the competitors with the highest scores at the end of 45 minutes (in their age classes) are the winners. Entry costs are modest and the price for casual registrations is $20 for adults, $10 for juniors (under 21) and $20 for groups, including timing stick hire. There is also a free ‘mini” course suitable for beginners and young children. You can start any time between 4.30 and 6.45pm, and there will be a prizegiving ceremony in Mort Bay Park at 7.30pm with prizes in a range of competition classes, including non-binary categories. Local dignitaries will be in attendance and there will be rainbow cake for everyone. If you like running or walking with a “twist” you will love this event!
