Welcome to what has been dubbed the gaming century. We invite everyone to come and explore the world of queer indie games. Conceived by award-winning interactive designer Xavier Ho, this exhibition activates the SCA Project Space, a quirky hidden gallery inside the Quadrangle which now holds a suite of computers pre-loaded with queer games waiting for you and your friends to play.
It has been 45 years since the inception of Mardi Gras in protest against police violence. While the world is very different now, young queer folks still find it difficult to imagine positive futures. Many of these young people are digital natives who find meaning and creativity, not only in parades and parties, or literature and theatre, but in playing computer games that reflect their stories and experience. PRIDE AT PLAY makes queer indie games available to gamers of all spots and stripes and furthers research already underway at the University of Sydney’s Games and Play Lab.
Xavier Ho is an interdisciplinary creative technologist and designer. He is a recipient of the inaugural CSIRO Medal for Diversity and Inclusion for his contributions in raising awareness for LGBTQIA+ issues in the organisation. He was a finalist in the 2020 Victorian Premier Design Awards in the Digital Design category. As a games researcher, Xavier investigates representations of gender and sexuality and thinks about what queer experiences are possible in games. His work has previously been exhibited at the Victorian Pride Centre.
