Stardust a sixty minute monologue accompanied by contemporary images of New York City and the Hudson River piers.
Set in 1977, Stardust tells the story of Tommy McInerney, a young Australian performer living in Manhattan with dreams of making it big on the Broadway stage. But its post Stonewall and pre AIDS. The brakes are off and the Big Apple is high on liberation and explosive sexual energy. Our hero is in danger of losing his way, seriously.
And so whilst Tommy takes us on a wild tour of this crazy, dangerous, exhilarating city we learn something of Tommy’s troubled and at times violent past in a homophobic Australia, from which he fled, and we worry for his rapid descent into the no-holes-barred scene of the New York nightlife of the 70’s.
STARDUST was written to provide a glimpse into what it was like to be homosexual in Australia prior to C.A.M.P. – Dennis Altman, gay liberation and Mardi Gras; into in the newly liberated America of the 70’s before the horror that was AIDS, and into the ubiquitous influence of America on Australian gay cultural life. This is the world premiere of this original work written specifically for Sydney Mardi Gras/ World Pride 2023.
NB: The play deals frankly with gay life at the time. Elements may confront or disturb some audience members.
