In 1973, the NSW Builders Labourers Federation went on strike in support of a Macquarie University student who had been kicked out of his dormitory for being gay. Known as the first ‘Pink Ban’, this is considered the world’s first industrial action for gay rights. 50 years on, the Australian union movement has continued to be crucial in the fight for LGBTQIA+ rights.
From the Pink Bans, to decriminalising homosexuality, super for same sex couples and marriage equality: we’re celebrating our proud history with a launch event held at Sydney Trades Hall.
Unionists know we’re stronger together.
Join us as we launch ‘Fifty Years of Fighting!’ this Sydney WorldPride!
